When I went to Sephora earlier this month to find a new moisturizer, I was shocked when offered face oil. Having lived with acne-prone skin through all most of my teen years, my immediate reaction was a polite, “I don’t think so.” Read on to find out what changed my mind and why face oil might be exactly what you need, too.
After speaking with beauty consultant, Viki Despo, I learned that face oil may have been exactly what my skin has been longing for all these years, after all. Despo, who has worked in the beauty industry for over six years for brands like Clarins, Dior, Guerlain, Lancôme, La Roche-Posay, and currently Nuxe Cosmetics, shared the most important things you need to know about face oils, and this info just might benefit you, too:
1. Face oils will not block your pores
“A lot of people fear that face oils are comedogenic and that they will block their pores,” Despo explains. “But many essential oils are non-comedogenic and can provide many benefits for your skin.” Despo says that face oil can actually help reduce redness and add just the right amount of moisture to the areas that need it most. And because it doesn’t block the pores, it won’t irritate or cause acne breakouts.
Suggestion: Marula oil. This oil is made from an east African Marula nut. It is very high in antioxidants, will help your skin glow, and helps defend your skin from harmful UV rays and pollution.
2. People with oily skin should use face oils
Despo says most people with oily skin usually use harsh chemical products to completely eliminate excess sebum from their face. This can cause the skin to become overly dry and activate it’s natural defense mechanism, which is to create more oil. Instead, by applying a face oil made for your skin type, your skin can regulate and balance the amount it needs and regulate sebum production.
Suggestion: Tea Tree Oil. Works well for blemished skin and is very soothing.
3. There are many benefits to using face oils
The main benefit of face oil is that is intensely hydrates by penetrating the skin deeper than a moisturizer can. Rather than sitting on the surface of the skin, Despo says an oil will penetrate the skin better and provide it with a radiant glow. Plus, face oil is rich in antioxidants, known for their anti-aging benefits.
Suggestion: Rose Hip Oil. Rose Hip is a seed, as well as natural retinol, which is known for anti-aging properties. It is also high in antioxidants, another anti-aging ingredient.
4. Find an oil that is right for you
As with any facial product, Despo recommends opting for products with fewer ingredients and cautions against anything silicone-based. Stick to essential oils instead to achieve optimal results and always select a product designed for your skin type.
Suggestion: Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse. A great oil for all skin types in need of hydration. Includes 98.1% natural ingredients.
